Softball drops two in Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas – South Dakota State opened play at the UTA Maverick Invitational on Friday with a pair of losses, falling to host UT Arlington 9-7 in the afternoon and 5-2 against Central Michigan in the evening.
The losses drop the Jackrabbits to 1-5 on the season, while the Mavericks improved to 4-2 and the Chippewas to 4-1.
Sammy Bingham led the Jacks in the opener at the plate, she went 2 for 4 with a triple, and RBI and a run scored. Allison Huffman, a Texas native, posted her first two hits of the season in going 2 for 3 at the plate, while freshman Alyssa D'Agostino hit her first career homerun.
Down 3-1 entering the third inning, SDSU strung together four hits to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead, as Elyse Eitel, Samantha Terry and Devan Larsen all recorded RBI hits to put the Jacks on top.
The Jacks tacked on another run in the fourth, but the Mavericks came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and then took the lead with three more in the fifth, before adding one more in the sixth go lead 9-5 heading in to the seventh inning.
D’Augostino halved the lead with her homer in the seventh, but the rally fell short and the Mavericks held on for the 9-7 win.
Central Michigan struck first in the second game of the day, posting two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Jacks capitalized on a pair of CMU errors to score one in the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Chippewas scored two more in the third to go up 4-1.
SDSU added another run in the fourth in a Huffman single, but CMU got that one back in their next at bat for the final run of the game.
Huffman finished the game 2 for 3 and knocked in both SDSU runs. Bingham, Eitel and Lauren Chirnside all finished with a hit in the game.
The Jack look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when they take on Missouri State at 11 a.m.
