Jackrabbits split in Saturday action
JACKSON, Miss. – Aaron Machbitz homered twice and Chad Hodges pitched seven solid innings to lift South Dakota State to a 10-2 victory over Jackson State (Miss.) and salvage a split in college baseball action on Saturday.
The Jackrabbits dropped a 1-0 decision to Texas Southern earlier Saturday. SDSU ended the day 2-1 overall.
In Saturday’s late game, the two teams traded first-inning runs before the Jackrabbits scored nine consecutive runs in the middle innings.
Machbitz hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to push the Jackrabbit lead to 4-1, then capped a six-run seventh inning with a three-run blast. Scott Splett and Matt Johnson tallied run-scoring singles earlier in the frame, with Zach Coppola scoring the other run on a passed ball.
Hodges, who gave up a run-scoring single to Jovany Felipe in the home half of the seventh, allowed two runs on only two hits in his seven-inning sting. He struck out three and did not walk a batter, continuing a streak of consecutive innings without a walk by Jackrabbit starting pitchers to 20 1/3 innings to start the season.
A senior from Dallas, Texas, Machbitz led SDSU’s 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a career-high five runs batted in. Splett and Eric Danforth each added a pair of hits.
In Saturday’s opening game, Texas Southern scored the lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning and four Tiger pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Marquis Webb started the game-winning rally with a one-out single. Chris Lopez then reached on an error and Chris DeLeon followed with a double to score Webb.
The Jackrabbits put two runners on base in four innings, including each of the final three innings, but could not come up with the clutch hit. SDSU’s three hits in the game were singles by Eric Danforth, Matt Johnson and Aaron Machbitz.
Texas Southern starter Devin Kanorik faced the minimum through four innings and did not allow a hit in his six innings to earn the victory. He struck out three and walked three. Robert Pearson pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the save.
In his Jackrabbit debut, Chris Anderson scattered five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven over seven innings. The lone run allowed by the southpaw was unearned. Talon Jumper pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
