Jackrabbits travel to Fayetteville, Yankton
The South Dakota State track and field teams are competing at the Arkansas Spring Invite and the USD Snowbird Saturday.
ARKANSAS SPRING INVITE:
Four Jackrabbits are heading to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Arkansas Spring Invite. Jazzelena Black, Zach Koosman, Kali Olson and Mary Wirth will be representing the Jackrabbits this weekend in Arkansas.
The Arkansas Spring Invitational is held at John McDonnell Field.
Black is set to compete in the long and triple jump events. Koosman will be jumping in the men’s high jump, while Olson and Wirth are competing in the women’s high jump.
1 p.m.: Women’s Long Jump (Black)
2 p.m.: Women’s High Jump (Olson, Wirth)
4 p.m.: Men’s High Jump (Koosman)
5 p.m.: Women’s Triple Jump (Black)
USD SNOWBIRD (DAKOTA DUALS):
The USD Snowbird (Dakota Duals) takes place in Yankton, S.D., at Williams Field (Yankton High School). The field events start at 1 p.m. (men’s hammer throw, women’s javelin throw) and the running events begin at 3 p.m. (women’s 4x100-meter relay).
The USD Snowbird will feature Nebraska-Omaha (women), North Dakota, South Dakota and South Dakota State.
LAST YEAR AT THE ARKANSAS SPRING INVITE:
Brooke Garner won the hammer throw with her of 192 feet, 8 inches and placed fifth in the discus throw (160-0).
The 4x100-meter relay team finished in a time of 47.58 seconds, which at the time was the seventh-best time in school history. The team featured Ashley Odegaard, Megan Bren, Gina Fritz and Carly Carper.
Michael Krsnak broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run with his time of 8:23.17. Chris Gruenhagen set the previous school record during the 2007 season when he posted a time of 8:26.
LAST YEAR AT THE DUALS:
Jeremiah Ary won the triple jump with his distance of 48-6 and he placed second in the long jump with a mark of 22-10. His mark in the triple jump ranks fifth in school history.
Garner broke her own school record in the hammer throw. She recorded a distance of 198-11 to win the hammer throw and she also won the discus throw with her mark of 170-5.
SCHOOL RECORDS FALL:
Black and Wirth opened up their 2014 outdoor season with record-breaking performances. Black set the school record in the triple jump with her mark of 40-3 1/2 and Wirth re-set her school record in the high jump (5-10 3/4). Her old school record was set at the 2011 Howard Wood Dakota Relays (5-9 3/4). Wirth also holds the indoor high jump school record mark (5-10).
WIRTH IN THE NATION:
Wirth’s high jump mark of 5-10 3/4 is tied for seventh in the nation.
SUMMIT LEAGUE HONORS:
Wirth was named The Summit League’s Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week (April 1) for her record-setting performance at the Arizona State University Invitational.
Twenty-two Jackrabbits garnered All-Summit League honors at the 2013-14 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Andrew Thies was named to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Team. Thies, a junior, currently holds a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.926 as a Pharmacy major. He was also named Academic All-League during the 2013 outdoor season.
The Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third in The Summit League Preseason Poll and the women were selected fourth.
The Sioux City Relays and the Nebraska Quad are up next for the Jackrabbits. The Sioux City Relays is a two-day meet (Friday and Saturday) in Sioux City, Iowa, and the Nebraska Quad is next Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
