Nine Jacks in action at FILA Jr. Nationals

LAS VEGAS -- Many of South Dakota State's heralded No. 6 recruiting class competed in the opening round of the FILA Juniors Nationals Friday.

Wrestlers are competing to qualify for the FILA Juniors World Team trials to go to the Juniors World Championship.

Colin Holler (70 KG) and Nate Rotert (96 KG) made it through day one unblemished and enter tomorrow's quarterfinals in the championship bracket. Rotert will square off against Kyle Snyder, the defending junior world champion, while Holler will wrestle Blayne Briceno.

Holler and Rotert both recorded a pair of tech falls, with Holler picking up a third victory by decision.

“Colin and Nate came out and put points on the board,” SDSU assistant Israel Silva said. They had a good day and we’re excited about tomorrow.”

Luke Zilverberg (66 KG) went 3-1 on the day. Following a loss to Aaron Pico, a cadet world champ, Zilverberg responded with three consecutive tech falls of his own.

“Luke responded well by dominating following his loss to Pico,” Silva said.

Following an opening loss, Alex Macki responded with a fall to advance to tomorrow on the backside.

Redshirt freshman Trey Hable went 3-2 in day one. Hable opened the day with a fall. Following a loss, Hable recorded back-to-back tech falls before falling in the 4th consolation round.

Other Jacks in action included Kyle Leet (70 KG), Austin Oyen (63 KG) and Hank Goettl (70 KG).

Leet and Goettl both went 1-2 on the day, while Oyen both went 0-2.
