Koosman jumps into sixth

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Freshman Zach Koosman jumped into the SDSU record book Friday as the South Dakota State men’s track and field team competed at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College. Koosman cleared a height of 6 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the high jump event to take third. He now ranks sixth all-time at SDSU. Koosman also placed eighth in the triple jump event with his distance of 43-9.

Joining Koosman in the top-five of the high jump at Simpson was Connor Berg. Berg posted a fifth-place finish with his height of 6-6 1/4.

Drew Kraft went on to win the 1,500-meter run and three other Jackrabbit runners placed in the top-10. Kraft finished with a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 56.76 seconds. Brendan Sage clocked in for a personal-best time of 3:58.62 to take third-place.

Also in the 1,500-meter run, Daniel Pettit and Grant VanKeulen finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh, respectively. Pettit posted a time of 4:00.31, while VanKeulen crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 4:01.78.

Trevor Capra paced the Jackrabbits in the 5,000-meter run. He finished 14th with a time of 15:11.86.

In the pole vault, Ryan Schaefer took seventh as he cleared a height of 15-5.

Three Jackrabbit throwers placed in the top-10 of the hammer throw. Ryan Ackman (170-0) led the Jackrabbit pack with his fourth-place finish. Austin Benson (155-6) placed sixth and Kyle Anderson (145-6) claimed ninth.

Benson also placed ninth in the shot put with his mark of 46-10.

In the discus throw, Cullen Mack recorded a season-best throw of 163-9 en route to a fourth-place finish. Also in the discus throw, Benson posted a seventh-place finish with his mark of 148-2.

Jeremiah Ary was a quarter of an inch away from tying his personal-best mark in the long jump event. Ary took third with his distance of 23-7 1/4.

Ary also led the Jackrabbits in the triple jump event. Ary posted a mark of 46-3 1/4 to place third. Finishing fourth in the triple jump was Jake Sanderson. He tallied a distance of 44-11 1/2.

Blair Seymour went on to place fourth in the javelin throw with his mark of 165-3.

Traxton Priebe ran the 110-meter hurdles in 16.81 to place 16th.

Justin Carson tallied a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 55.82.

Bo Arnold cracked the top-10 in the 100-meter dash. He placed 10th with a final time of 11.28.

Kory Kohlhof claimed 12th in the 200-meter dash with his final time of 23.15.

In the 400-meter dash, Alex Wiemann posted a personal-best time of 51.56 to take 17th.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Levi Winkels, Wiemann, Jesse Dunn and Adam Halverson combined for a final time of 3:21.58 to take fourth.

Along with competing at Simpson College, the Jackrabbits also took part in the Drake Relays.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Marc Husman, Arnold, Joseph Bednar and LeAndre Kennedy posted an overall time of 42.17 to place 28th.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Carson, Husman, Priebe and Winkels posted a final time of 3:16.71 to finish 24th.

Kraft, Sage, Joel Reichow and Pettit competed Thursday night in the 4x1600-meter run. They posted a final time of 17:15.85 to finish 12th.

The Jackrabbits wrap up the Drake Relays tomorrow and are at the 89th Howard Wood Dakota Relays next weekend.
