Jacks bounce Botafogo in Brazil finale
RIO DE JANIERO – The South Dakota State men’s basketball team closed out its Brookings to Brazil Tour on Sunday with a dominating 114-63 win over Botafogo, a team from the Brazilian A1 League, the top league in the country.
“I don’t’ think we played great, defense was a concern even though the score was what it was, but it’s hard to stay locked in when you’re up by so much,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “I think the big thing that we got out of this trip, was that we had some freshmen get some good experience and really gain some confidence, and we’re going to need those guys to play for us.”
Four of those freshmen scored in double figures in the win, led by Skyler Flatten, who led all players with 16 points. Lane Severyn scored 14 points, with Ian Theisen adding 12 and Deondre Parks and Mike Daum 11 each. SDSU also got nine points from both Cody Larson and Jake Bittle.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to an early 28-9 lead in the first quarter and led by as many as 40 points in the first half before taking a 63-28 lead into halftime.
The second half looked just like the first, with all of the Jackrabbits getting involved, as 14 different Jackrabbits cracked the unofficial scorebook.
The Brookings to Brazil games in the books, the Jackrabbits begin their long journey from Brazil to Brookings on Monday, and should arrive in Brookings sometime on Tuesday afternoon.
SDSU opens the regular season on Nov. 14 at Buffalo.
