South Dakota State was selected to finish second in the Summit League during the 2014 season, according to a preseason poll released Tuesday.

Defending champion Denver was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the poll, which was conducted by the league’s head coaches. The Pioneers captured the Summit League regular season title with a perfect 7-0-0 record and advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning the Summit League tournament.

Denver, which was ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Poll, received eight of nine first-place votes and 64 total points. The Jackrabbits, who posted a 6-0-1 record and six shutouts in league play, received the other first-place vote and finished with a total of 55 points.

Last season’s tournament runner-up, North Dakota State, was picked to finish in third. Oral Roberts was selected to come in fourth in their return to the league. The Golden Eagles, who last played in the Summit League in 2011, posted a program-best 15 wins in 2013.

Western Illinois rounded out the top five, and Fort Wayne, IUPUI, Omaha and South Dakota completed the nine-team poll. The full release can be found here.

SDSU opens its season with an exhibition match against Kansas Friday at 5 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan. The Jackrabbits open regular season play against Creighton Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at Fishback Park.
