ELMHURST, Ill. — For the second time this year, South Dakota State University women's basketball player Jennifer Warkenthien has been named Summit League Female Athlete of the Month.
A senior from Willow Lake, Warkenthien was a recipient of the award for March after leading the Jackrabbits to the league basketball title and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Summit League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, Warkenthien averaged 14.3 points and 9.2 rebounds in six games during the month of March, while shooting 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field and 93 percent (26-of-28) from the line. Also Athlete of the Month in January, she ended the season with four straight double-doubles, including a 15-point, 10-rebound outing against TCU in the first round and an 18-point, 10-rebound performance in a 60-58 last-second loss to No. 5 Baylor. An honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press, Warkenthien became only the second player in SDSU history to tally 500 points and grab 300 rebounds in a season and went a perfect 20-for-20 from the charity stripe at The Summit League Championship.
Warkenthien shared the award on the women's side with IUPUI diver Chen Ni. The Summit League Diver of the Year, Ni tallied a score of 310.40 en route to a fourth-place finish in the 10-meter platform at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. In the preliminary round, Ni scored a 340.30 in the event, breaking a pool record at the Student Rec Center Natatorium at Texas A&M University.
The men's award winner was Oral Roberts indoor track and field All-American Marvin Bonde.
