Women third, men fifth at SDSU Classic

The South Dakota State women claimed a third place finish at the SDSU Classic on Saturday in Brookings, while the Jackrabbit men finished fifth in front of a large Hobo Day crowd at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Nebraska’s Lara Crofford won the women’s event, completing the 5K course in 17:31, and led the Huskers a second place finish behind Minnesota. Megan Duwell finished second overall with a time of 17:33, one of six Golden Gophers to finish in the top eight.

SDSU senior Claire Steinke led the Jackrabbit women with a time of 18:49, good for 21st overall, junior Nichole Davis finished 26th in 19:00, followed by senior Caitlin Berry three places behind her at 19:07. Sophomore Kelsey Aune finished in the same pack in 32nd place in a time of 19:09. Redshirt freshman Anna Garner also scored points for the Jackrabbits, finishing 43rd overall in a time of 19:22.

South Dakota State graduate Brad Lowery won the men’s race, finishing the 8K course in 24:47, and led the SDSU Alumni team to a fourth place overall finish.

David Adams led three Nebraska runners in the top-ten, finishing fourth with a time of 25:34. The Huskers took the men’s team title, followed by North Dakota State in second, Minnesota State, Mankato in third and the host Jackrabbits in fifth.

Sophomore Marshall
Kambestad led the Jacks with a seventh place, finishing in 25:50, followed closely by freshman Michael Krsnak in 10th place with a time of 26:05.

Freshman Brad Anderson crossed the line next for the Jacks in 20th place with a time of 27 minutes even. Senior Joe Roby crossed ten seconds later in 37th place. Freshman Lars Mattison finished 66th with a time of 28:14, while junior Todd Vlieger rounded out the Jackrabbit scoring in 74th place with a time of 28:27.

Both SDSU teams get a week of to prepare for meets on Oct. 18, in West Salem, Wis. The women at the Tori Neubauer Invitational, the men at the Jim Drews Invitational.
