FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - One day after being upset by South Dakota State, the 14th-ranked Arkansas baseball team scored runs in bunches during the late innings to defeat the Jackrabbits, 21-2, Wednesday afternoon.
The Razorbacks improved to 9-3 overall. SDSU, off to its best start since 1996, dropped to 6-3.
Arkansas wasted little time in taking the lead as Collin Kuhn walked to lead off the game and Zack Cox followed with a two-run home run to right field. Kuhn hit a solo shot in the second to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.
The Jackrabbits got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth inning. With two outs, Jesse Sawyer reached on an error, moved to second on a base hit by Zach Rhodes and scored on an opposite-field single off the bat of Zach Briggs. Erik DeJong followed with a base hit to center to score Rhodes.
The Razorbacks got a run back in the home half of the fourth inning, then began to pull away with a three-run sixth inning. Tim Carver opened the frame with a double and later scored on a groundout. Andy Wilkins added a two-run double later in the inning.
Arkansas took advantage of three Jackrabbit errors in the seventh inning to tack on four more runs in the seventh. Bo Bigham knocked in two of the runs with a double.
In the eighth, the Razorbacks sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 times. Another Jackrabbit error aided the Arkansas offensive explosion, which featured a three-run triple by Matt Vinson and two-run double by Carver.
Freshman Stephen Bougher took the loss for the Jackrabbits. The Papillion, Neb., native allowed four runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings, while walking three and striking out one. Four other pitchers worked in the game for SDSU, which gave up 18 hits.
Seven different Arkansas players notched at least two hits.
Randall Fant pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one, to earn the victory. D.J. Baxendale struck out four batters in three more scoreless innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.
SDSU continues its Spring Break trip with three games at the Metrodome Classic in Minneapolis this weekend. The Jackrabbits are scheduled to play Creighton (Neb.) in the opening game at 1 p.m. Friday.
