Rosa shines at Gopher Invite

South Dakota State freshman Iasmin Rosa moved to 3-0 at the Gopher Invite by defeating Minnesota's Kelsey Frechette 6-2, 6-2. Rosa will face Gonzaga's Isabell Klingert for the "maroon" flight championship tomorrow.

"Iasmin continues to impress and it will be fun to see how she handles tomorrow's finals, "head coach Michael Engdahl said. "If she plays like she did today, she has a great chance to come out on top."

In the "Gopher" flight, Beatriz Souza fell to Alysa Straub (UW-Milwaukee) 6-1, 6-1 and will face Northern Iowa's Sydney Wolfe tomorrow for 7th-place. After going 2-1 in the first day of competition, Tacy Haws-Lay stayed staved off elimination by defeating Nina Barudzic (South Dakota) 6-1, 6-1. Haws-Lay will go up against Jordan Kearney (Northern Iowa) for 9th-place tomorrow.

Tiffany Filipovich earned 13th-place by way of a 6-3, 6-4 win over South Dakota's Ana Vujosevic.

Ffion Davies fell North Dakota's Lacey Sprinkel 6-0, 6-4 to eliminate her in the "U" flight.

"We got off to a slow start," Engdahl said, "but it was great to see all four teams bounce back. There was fight in each match, which was great to see."

In doubles action, the duo of Jenny Blackburne and Ffion Davies continued their winning ways in the "gold" flight with an 8-6 win over a pair from Iowa State. They then fell to a tandem from Eastern Michigan 8-2 and will face a doubles team from Minnesota tomorrow for third-place.

In the "maroon" flight, Haws-Lay and Filipovich won 8-4 over a squad from USD before falling to a team from Eastern Michigan. They will face fellow Jackrabbits Iasmin Rosa and Florencia Magni tomorrow for 11th-place. The Rosa/Magni tandem went 1-1 on the day, defeating a team from UND 8-5 before falling to a team from UW-Milwaukee 8-5.

In the "Gopher" flight, Brooke Henry and Beatriz Souza took fifth-place with two wins on day. They defeated pairs from Iowa State and USD. 

"Overall, I am happy with how the girls played today," Engdahl said. "We look to stay focued and finish strong tomorrow."
