Rosa completes weekend with championship
Freshman Iasmin Rosa defeated Gonzaga's Isabell Klingert 6-0, 6-0 to claim the "maroon" flight at the Gopher Invite. Rosa's closest match on the weekend came in her opening match Friday as she defeated UNI's Elvira Lopez 6-3, 7-5.
"Rosa played flawless tennis today," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "She played a great opponent and didn't even giver her a chance to get into the match. It was one of the cleanest matches I have ever seen. She should be proud of the way she played this weekend."
In the "gopher" flight, SDSU went 1-2 on Sunday - dropping the seventh and ninth-place matches, while winning the 13th-place match. In the seventh-place match, Beatriz Souza fell to Northern Iowa's Sydney Wolfe 6-3, 6-3. In the ninth-place match, Tacy Haws-Lay dropped her match to UNI's Jordyn Kearney 6-4, 1-6, 1-0. Tiffany Filipovich was the lone Jackrabbit to win in the flight as she defeated South Dakota's Ana Vujosevic 6-3, 6-4.
In a battle of all Jackrabbits, Magni/Rosa defeated Haws-Lay/Filipovich 8-0 to capture 11th-place in the "maroon" flight.
"The girls finished in style today," Engdahl said. "We were a little beat up, but that's expected at the end of a tournament. Overall, it was a great weekend, both for learning and experience. Hopefully we can carry the focus into practice this week as we prepare for Omaha next weekend."
Both the men and women will be in action next weekend at the Omaha Invite.
