WACO, Texas – The South Dakota State equestrian team opened the 2013-14 season on Friday at the Willis Invitational in Waco, Texas with a loss to UT-Martin. The teams rode to an 8-8 tie, but the Skyhawks won on a 1,154-1,150.25 advantage in raw score.

"We knew it would be a tough start to the year starting off with a tournament and a young team,'head coach Megan Rossiter said. "However it was a close meet, as we tied in every event. I'm happy with the way our freshmen rode in their first event."

Four Jackrabbit freshmen made the most of their collegiate debuts by winning their points, including Elizabeth Niewonja, who won her point in horsemanship and earned MOP honors with a score of 72.

Other freshmen to score a point in their first-ever competition include Jessica Andronowitz and Blair Julia Wright in equitation on the flat and Maddie Lewis over fences. Andronowitz scored a 69 to earn her point, Wright scored a 71 and Lewis a 68.

The Jacks also got points from Santana Wright over fences, Shelby Webb in horsemanship and both Caroline Lesousky and Raivenne Scott in reining.

The Jacks also started their second meet of the season against New Mexico State on Friday, but complete the show on Saturday.
