Jackrabbits start Summit League play this weekend

The South Dakota State women’s soccer team is on the road this weekend as they begin Summit League play at Western Illinois and IUPUI. The Jackrabbits will play the Fighting Leathernecks on Friday at 3 p.m. and take on the Jaguars on Sunday at Noon.


IUPUI 4-3-3
SDSU 5-3-2
WIU 4-5-1


The Fighting Leathernecks are coming into this weekend following a pair of losses against Valparaiso (2-0) and Western Michigan (4-0). Their biggest win of the year came in their season opener against Big Ten member Northwestern. They beat the Wildcats 2-1 in 20T.

WIU has played four common opponents with the Jackrabbits during their non-conference season. They have a record of 3-1-1 against those teams. WIU played Northern Iowa twice this year and won both meetings.

Tyra Markey, who has five points via two goals and one assist, is leading their offense. Laura Atkinson, 2012 Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year, has played in eight games, while posting a record of 3-5-0 with 40 saves.

WIU, unlike SDSU is being outscored 12-6 in the second half of games, while the Jackrabbits are outscoring their opponents 10-2.

The Jackrabbits own the all-time series 6-1-1 over the Fighting Leathernecks. Last year, SDSU defeated WIU 2-0 in Brookings.


The Jaguars begin conference action on Friday as they host North Dakota State. IUPUI has a record of 4-3-3 heading into conference play.

Three different players have five points each. Tori Minnich and Taylor Heidorn both are tied with two goals apiece.  

Giselle Guzman and Nicole Kulovitz have both split time in net for the Jaguars. Guzman has played the majority of the minutes (675:07) for IUPUI. Guzman has most saves (45) between the two keepers, but Kulovitz has the better record (3-0-1).

The Jackrabbits own the all-time series 6-2-1 over the Jaguars. Last year, SDSU and IUPUI ended in a 1-1 tie in Brookings.


SDSU did not compete last weekend, as they did not have a game scheduled, they last played on Sept. 22. The Jackrabbits are entering conference play following a 6-1 win over North Dakota. In the contest, SDSU had six players score, four of which scored their first goal of the season.

Alyssa Brazil is leading the Jackrabbit attack with ten points, she had a total of four points last year. She leads the team in goals (four), assists (two). She also ranks in the top-five on the team in shots (16) and shots on goal (seven).

Diana Potterveld is back to her goal-scoring ways as she has tallied three goals in three of the past four games. She scored the game-winning goals against Drake (1-0) and Northern Iowa (1-0).

Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep is moving up the SDSU rankings as she now ranks in the top-10 in six of the SDSU all-time goalkeeping categories. Inskeep has totaled 35 saves and five shutouts during the 959 minutes she has played.


The Jackrabbits are outscoring their opposition 16-8 and they are also outshooting their opponents 166-87.


SDSU has scored 10 goals in the second half of their games compared to the two goals scored by their competition.


Ten different Jackrabbits have scored at least one goal this year.


SDSU has played in four overtime games, in which they have posted an overall record of 1-1-2.


After the first 10 games of the season, head coach Lang Wedemeyer has a career record of 123-100-30.


Nine Jackrabbits have started all 10 games this year.

The Jackrabbits return home to play in-state rival South Dakota in the annual South Dakota Showdown Series on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. SDSU will also host Omaha on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
