LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The South Dakota State equestrian team  didn’t get its first win of the season on Saturday at the New Mexico State Tournament, but the Jackrabbits scored well in a 7-7 loss to No. 3 TCU and in a 10-4 loss to No. 6 New Mexico State. SDSU lost on raw score to the Horned Frogs by a 1,200.75-1,265.25 margin.

“I feel like this team has finally hit its stride,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “I think prior to this weekend we were riding afraid to make a mistake, and it showed. Now we’re riding with the desire to show what we can do.”

The pair of losses drops the Jackrabbits to 0-7 on the season, while TCU improves to 4-1, with its only loss coming to the host Aggies on Friday, while the Aggies improve to 7-1 on the season.

Blair Julia Wright’s 65 on the flat and Santana Wright’s 76 over fences represented the Jacks only points in the hunt seat events before the reiners got the Jacks back in the meet with a sweep in the event. Victoria Johnson, Sarah Bowen, Shelby Webb and Elizabeth Niewojna all won their point, with Niewojna earning her second-career MOP honor in the process with her score of 73.3. The win also boosted her record to 5-0 on the season, although she would fall to 5-1 with a loss against New Mexico State.

Raivenne Scott kept her record perfect on the season in reining, carding a 70.5 to earn the Jacks lone point in the event and improve her record to 6-0.

In the second meet of the day, New Mexico State swept the flat portion of the completion and took two of the points in fences. Jessica Andronowitz scored her point with an 82 to end the day with a 2-4 overall record, while Jordan Goodall picked up her first win of the season with a score of 81 after riding to a tie against TCU.

The two other points against the Aggies both came in reining, where Scott went to 7-0 on the season with a score of 73, and Laura Dunlavy rode to MOP honors, and her first win of the season, with a score of 72. She also tied against TCU with the same score of 72.

The Jackrabbits return home in search of their first win of the season on Nov. 23, when they close the fall season at the DeHaan Equestrian Center against South Carolina at 10 a.m.
