CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – South Dakota State placed five wrestlers at the UNI Open in, including three that advanced to the semifinals, with junior John Nething II (174) winning the tournament, his second open championship in as many weeks. Freshman Colin Holler (157) and redshirt freshman Alex Kocer (149) also advanced to the semis, with Holler and Kocer both taking fourth.

"The guys are continuing to show improvement and the results are starting to come," head coach Chris Bono said. "Having five placers and a champion is a great way to end the first semester. We are excited to get back in the room to continue working."

After receiving a first-round bye, Nething II pinned Iowa State’s Aaron Sorenson (3:48) and then downed Northern Iowa’s Autin Gelbach and Michigan State’s Nick Kaczanowski 6-1 and 6-0, respectively to reach the championship bout. In the final match, Nething II defeated Iowa State’s Carson Powell 5-1.

Following a bye in the first round, Kocer defeated Missouri’s Blake Pepper and Trevor Wiest by scores of 7-3 and 8-1 before falling to the Tiger’s Drake Houdashelt, who is ranked third in the nation, 14-1.

Holler, who wrestled unattached, opened the tournament with back-to-back major decisions over Missouri’s Matt Lemanowicz and Northern Iowa’s Tayler Berger, 10-2 and 13-1, respectively. After dropping a 3-1 decision to Missouri’s Kyle Brady, who is ranked No. 6 in the nation, Holler advanced over North Dakota State’s Clayton Ream by injury default before dropping the third-place match 4-3 to UNI’s Zach Witte.

Also placing for SDSU was redshirt freshman Ben Schwery, who took fifth and freshman Nate Rotert, who placed sixth.

After dropping a 4-2 decision to Mizzou’s BJ Toal, Schwery was victorious over Grandview’s Devin Peterson by injury default.

Roter, who wrestled unattached, dropped a 7-1 decision to Mizzou’s J’Den Cox before pinning SIU-Edwardsville’s Matt McClimens. Rotert then defeated Michigan State’s Luke Jones and Campbell’s Taylor McGriffen before losing back-to-back matches to end the day.
