Paluch Leads Jacks Past UNO

OMAHA, Neb. – Senior Steph Paluch scored a career-high 21 points as South Dakota State defeated Omaha, 80-66, in Summit League women’s basketball action Saturday in front of 607 fans in Sapp Fieldhouse.

SDSU improves to 13-7 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Omaha falls to 9-8 overall and 1-2. The Jacks run their win streak to four games.

Paluch (Pierre) shot 8 for 16, including a career-high five three-pointers. Junior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) scored a season-high 14 points, including 12 second-half points. Freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) scored 11 points off the bench while senior Hanna Strop (New Prague, Minn.) tied her season-high with 10 points. Junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

SDSU opened the game on an 11-0 run with Paluch scoring seven points during the run. Omaha used a 9-0 run to pull within two, 15-13, with 8:47 left. The Jacks then built a 10-point lead outscoring UNO 12-4 to take a 27-17 lead with 3:36 remaining. Gabby Boever (Worthington, Minn.) scored five points in the run.

South Dakota State shot 44.6 percent from the field, including 54.5 percent in the second half, 30.8 percent from the three-point arc and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Omaha was led by Ericka House with 13 points while Mikaela Shaw and Taijhe Kelly had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Jackrabbits closed the half with Young scoring five points and Megan Stuart (Roseville, Minn.) collecting two points to give them a 34-26 halftime lead.

UNO outscored the Jackrabbits 7-2 to open the second half to pull within three points, 38-35, with 17:23 left in the game. The Jacks used a 15-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, 53-39, with 12:41 on the clock.

Clarin, who ran into foul trouble in the first half and early in the second, scored six of her 14 points to put the Jacks up 72-62 with just over three minutes left in the game.

Paluch connected on back-to-back three-pointers to close the game.

South Dakota State concludes its three-game road swing with a 2 p.m. game at North Dakota State Jan. 25.
