Rabbits on the road at Minnesota

The South Dakota State track and field teams are heading to Minneapolis this weekend to compete in the Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite.

The Competition: Other schools competing in the Jack Johnson Invite are: Augustana, Drake, Iowa, Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, South Florida and Western Michigan.

The Meet: The Jack Johnson Invite starts on Friday at 3 p.m., with the 60-meter hurdles (pentathlon). The action on Saturday continues at 10 a.m., with the 60-meter hurdles (heptathlon).

Last Time Out: Due to inclement weather along I-29, only a handful of Jackrabbits were able to compete at the Bison Classic last weekend in Fargo, N.D. Shelby Assmus and Kali Olson highlighted the group of Jackrabbits in action.

Assmus posted two-second place finishes (shot put and weight throw) and Olson placed second in the high jump. Assmus recorded distances of 44 feet and 0 inches (shot put) and 54-3 ¼ (weight throw) on the afternoon. Olson jumped a height of 5-3 in the high jump event.

On the men’s side, the Jackrabbits had two throwers place in the top-five in the shot put. Austin Benson placed fourth overall (46-11 ½) in his Jackrabbit debut and Kyle Anderson took fifth in the event with his mark of 46-11.

Looking Ahead: The Jackrabbits are scheduled to attend the Iowa State Bill Bergan Invite and the Minnesota State Open next weekend. The Iowa State Bill Bergan Invite takes place in Ames, Iowa and the Minnesota State Open is in Mankato, Minn.
