Jackrabbits fall 5-4 to Creighton in 10 innings
OMAHA, Neb. – Reagan Fowler singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Creighton to a 5-4 victory over South Dakota State Friday night in the opening game of a three-game college baseball series at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Bluejays improved to 8-5-1 overall, while SDSU dropped to 9-9. The two teams are scheduled to play again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Jackrabbits led 3-0 through four innings, breaking a scoreless deadlock on a two-run single by Jordan Varga in the top of the third inning that scored Scott Splett and Tyler Shannon, and adding a run in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Eric Danforth that plated Al Robbins.
Creighton cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs against Jackrabbit starter Adam Bray. Ryan Fitzgerald tripled in the first run and later scored on a groundout.
The Bluejays took the lead an inning later, taking advantage of an error and two wild pitches to go ahead 4-3.
Creighton’s game-winning, rally in the 10th started with a leadoff walk to Nicky Lopez. After a fielders choice, Jake Peter moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and scored on Fowler’s single up the middle with two outs.
Peter was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Joe Erickson took the loss for the Jackrabbits despite striking out five and walking two in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Jackrabbit starter Adam Bray fanned six batters, walked two and scattered seven hits over six innings.
Fowler and Kevin Lamb each tallied a pair of hits for Creighton.
