MACOMB, Ill. – The South Dakota State softball team came up just short in its bid to sweep Western Illinois on Sunday, falling to the host Fighting Leathernecks 4-3 in Summit League action.

The Jackrabbits win the series 2-1, but the loss drops them to 7-18 on the season overall and to 2-4 in league play, while Western Illinois improves to 17-12 overall and to an even 3-3 in the league.

SDSU opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning on a Devan Larsen double that scored Emily Webber and Allison Huffman to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.

The visitors tacked on a run in the fifth to go up 3-0 on a Sammy Bingham single that scored Lauren Chirnside, but the Leathernecks got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Jackrabbit lead to 3-2.

Western added two more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 4-3, and a Jackrabbit rally came up short in the seventh with one runner getting tossed out at home and another getting caught stealing to end the game.

Huffman finished the day 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored, and five other Jackrabbits recorded hits in the game.

Jennifer Sutton took the loss after one inning of relief of Ashlyn Bender, who pitched the first five innings, giving up no runs on six hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout.

The Jacks return to action next weekend against IUPUI, in a three game series scheduled to start on Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on the SDSU campus in Brookings, but weather could force changes to the location and/or start times.
