IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa recorded its second consecutive walk-off win and carried the momentum into the second game of a Saturday baseball doubleheader, sweeping the twinbill from South Dakota State by scores of 4-3 and 12-3 at Duane Banks Field.

In sweeping the three-game weekend series, Iowa improved to 25-15 overall. The Jackrabbits dropped to 21-21 on the season.

The Jackrabbits scored the first two runs of the opener on fifth-inning run-scoring singles by Sam Pack and Zach Holt.

SDSU starter Chris Anderson carried a shutout into the sixth inning, when Iowa tied the game at 2-all on a two-run single by Dan Potempa. The Hawkeyes knocked Anderson out of the game and took the lead with a run in the seventh as Nick Day led off with a single, stole second and scored on Peyton’s two-out single up the middle.

The Jackrabbits came back to tie the game at 3-all in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. SDSU loaded the bases with nobody out as Scott Splett reached on an error, Zach Coppola was hit by a pitch and Aaron Machbitz walked. Pinch-hitter Matt Johnson then grounded into a double play, but the tying run scored on the play.

Day again factored into Iowa’s winning rally in the ninth as he was hit by an Andrew Clemen pitch to lead off the frame. The Jackrabbits failed to get an out on a bunt attempt by Eric Toole and Jake Mangler walked to load the bases. Tyler Peyton then greeted reliever Blake Fiedelman with his fourth hit of the game, a single to center field that scored Day with the winning run.

Jake Yacinich added two hits for the Hawkeyes, who out-hit the Jackrabbits, 11-4.

Tyler Radtke earned the victory in relief for the second consecutive day, striking out two and walking one in two scoreless innings. Hawkeye starter Sasha Kuebel struck out six and walked two as he allowed three runs in seven innings.

Anderson struck out a season-high 10 batters and walked only one in a no-decision effort.

In Game 2, Taylor Zeutenhorst homered twice and Andrew Hedrick pitched 5 1/3 strong innings in relief to pace the Hawkeyes.

Zeutenhorst opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but SDSU countered with two runs in the top of the third inning. Johnson doubled in Zach Coppola with the first Jackrabbit run, while Jordan Varga plated the second run on a groundout.

Iowa took the lead for good with a three-run home half of the third against Jackrabbit starter Chad Hodges. A bases-loaded walk to Peyton forced in the first run. Yacinich singled in the go-ahead run, with the third run of the inning scoring on a double play.

The Hawkeyes built the lead to 7-2 with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Iowa tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a run-scoring double by Mangler. Zeutenhorst capped the scoring with his second solo homer of the game in the eighth.

Reid Clary, who was 3-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits at the plate, doubled to lead off the ninth and scored SDSU’s final run on a base hit by Cody Sharrow.

Hedrick held the Jackrabbits to only two hits in 5 1/3 shutout innings in earning the victory. Hodges lasted only three innings for SDSU, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks. He did not strike out a batter.

The Jackrabbits are scheduled to return to action Wednesday, taking on the University of Sioux Falls in a game to be played at Sioux Falls Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
