The National Collegiate Equestrian Association selected South Dakota State junior Raivenne Scott to represent the Jackrabbits and the NCEA at the 2014 NRHA Derby Catch Ride on June 28, in Oklahoma City.

“I’m very excited for Raivenne to represent our team at this prestigious event,” SDSU head coach Megan Rossiter said. “She worked extremely hard over the years to make it to this point, and is a top contender.”

A junior from Cornelius, Ore., Scott posted a 10-0-1 record as a sophomore in 2013-14, earning NCEA Reining All-American honors and one MOP award along the way. Her 10 wins marks the second-highest single-season total in SDSU history, and with two years left in her career, she already ranks tied for fourth in career reining wins with 15.

The competition, which begins on June 28, at 8 a.m. at State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., features 12 top collegiate riders: the four 2013-14 Reining All-American riders from the NCEA, the four top reining individuals from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and four collegiate riders chosen by the National Reining Horse Association. This is the ultimate catch ride competition, where each athlete is assigned a horse by random draw. Horses are donated by competitors at the Derby. They then get a fifteen minute warm up on the unfamiliar horse and compete one pattern on that horse. Highest score wins.

Scott follows in the footsteps of former Jackrabbits Helen Lauth, who competed at the NRHA Derby in 2008 and 2009, and Laura Dunlavy, who rode in the event in 2013.

The NRHA Derby runs for one week each summer in Oklahoma City and showcases the world's best reining horses in the four to six year age range. Thousands of spectators, exhibitors and horses attend the event each year. The Derby is one of two major events presented by the NRHA each year in Oklahoma City.
