Creating opportunities for Lifelong Champions

-A campaign for student-athletes at South Dakota State University

The opportunities for scholarship and facility enhancements continue to grow within athletics. It is clearly illustrated in our mission and vision statements that we expect to provide Jackrabbit student-athletes with a comprehensive collegiate experience highlighted by personal growth and academic success in a highly competitive environment.

Since 1889 South Dakota State athletics has provided life changing experiences for student-athletes. We currently have nearly 500 student-athletes competing in 21 intercollegiate sports.

We need to expand our base of support so that we can continue to attract and retain the best and brightest young men and women to South Dakota State University.

Our focus is to increase educational and athletic opportunities for our student-athletes. The Lifelong Champions Campaign has a goal of $20 million to enhance athletic facilities and build the athletic scholarship endowment. We currently offer 209 scholarships and our goal is to offer more than 220 by 2012. This growth will require significant investments in out athletic scholarship endowment.

Being the recipient of an athletic scholarship from South Dakota State University is an honor and a privilege. It has granted me the opportunity to train for a sport that I love and compete as a Division I athlete. Challenging academic courses coupled with a competitive athletic program make SDSU the ideal university of the Midwest. The support that the Jackrabbit athletic programs receive from students, alumni, and the community is unbelievable. Thank you for your never-ending support of Jackrabbit athletics.

SDSU Athletic Scholarship Endowment

Acorn Endowment – A vehicle to build an endowment (Scholarship Fund) over time through annual contributions and accumulated earnings.  The contributions are invested in a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds, and no award is made from the account until it reaches the full endowment mark of $20,000.  Once the endowment reaches $20,000, only a portion of the interest earnings are awarded in support of scholarships. The minimum annual contribution to this type of endowment is $1,000.  Once again, the donor may identify through a written memorandum of agreement:  what sport(s) is/are eligible for the award and the selection criteria for the recipient.

Scholarship Endowment – A scholarship that is designed to provide awards in perpetuity.  These contributions are also invested in a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds, and once again no award is given until the account reaches the $20,000 level.  Once the endowment mark is reached, only a percentage of the interest earned is awarded in the form of a scholarship. The donor may identify through a written memorandum of agreement:  what sport(s) is/are eligible for the award and the selection criteria for the recipient.
