Carpenter qualifies for U.S. Amateur

South Dakota State golfer Hudson Carpenter shot a two-under par at Victory Links Golf Course in Blaine, Minn. on July 23 and finished tied for second, qualifying him for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The junior from Stillwater, Minn. carded scores of 67 and 73 on the 7,092-yard, par-71 course to earn one of three qualifying spots for the the U.S. Amateur Championship, which runs August 13-19 at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.  

Senior David Smith also competed at the event, placing in a tie for 34th with scores of 71 and 81.

Carpenter had a breakout season for the Jackrabbits last spring and fall, competing in all 11 events with a scoring average of 74.23 in 26 rounds, which is the fourth-best single-season average in SDSU history. He was the only Jackrabbit to earn postseason honors last season, being named to the All-Summit League second team for his efforts.
