Souza named POW
South Dakota State women's tennis student-athlete Beatriz Souza was named The Summit League's Player of the Week after an undefeated weekend.
The Jackrabbits played three meets in Waterloo, Iowa, and finished with three wins. SDSU defeated Upper Iowa (7-0), Northern Iowa (4-3) and Green Bay (7-0).
Souza teamed with Florencia Magni at No. 3 doubles and played No. 4 singles and finished the weekend 6-0.
Souza opened the weekend with an 8-0 doubles win versus Meredith Worrall and Laura Alvarez of Upper Iowa and defeated Rosangel Epinoza 6-0, 6-1 in singles.
The most important win of the weekend came at UNI, as the Panthers won the team doubles point despite Souza and Magni defeating Lindsay Cayton and Katie Hammond in a tiebreaker (7-5). Because of the doubles outcome, the Jacks needed to win four of the six singles matches. And that is exactly what happened. Souza was pushed by Jessica King, but won the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) and won the second set by one break of serve (6-4).
In the weekend finale, Souza and Magni finished undefeated with an 8-6 win versus Stephanie Londre and Rachael Menos of Green Bay. In singles, Souza was a straight-set winner for the third time, defeating Rebecca Nelson 6-4, 6-3.
"Bea played some dominant tennis this weekend and definitely earned the recognition," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "It was a great week for Bea and the team. The girls have been working hard and their hard work is starting to pay off. It is awesome to see Bea and Jackrabbit tennis recognized for the things that are going on in our program."

SDSU is back in action on Friday at Creighton. Start time is set for 6 p.m. in Omaha, Neb.
