Jacks bested by 'Roos
The South Dakota State men's tennis team opened its conference schedule at Kansas City, but was bested 4-0.
For its first conference meets of the season, SDSU traveled to a conference triangular in Kansas City. The Jacks faced the Kangaroos on Friday and face IUPUI on Saturday.
In its weekend opener, defending Summit League champion Kansas City swept the doubles for the team point. Two of the matches went down to the wire, as both Andrea Boglić and Parker Lawley and Lucas Pereira and Henrique Pereira were edged 9-8 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
The 'Roos won at No. 2 for the sweep and the team point.
In singles, only three matches played to conclusion as UMKC won all three and secured the meet. The Kangaroos won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6.
Boglić was midway through the third set when the meet was decided after splitting the first two sets at No. 1, 6-4, 1-6. Lawley's match was unfinished in the second set at No. 3 and James Thorp was unfinished in the first set at No. 5.
"The boys should be proud of the way they played today," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We were within points of winning the doubles point and had our looks in singles, as well. UMKC is a next-level program and we did not back down at all. Overall, I thought as far as energy, it was our best match of the year. Being such a young team, we need to build from this match and be ready for another tough team tomorrow in IUPUI."
SDSU dropped to 5-9 overall, 0-1 in The Summit League.
UMKC improved to 3-7, but 1-0 in the league.
The Jacks meet IUPUI Jaguars on Saturday in its weekend finale at Kansas City.
