The National Collegiate Equestrian Association selected South Dakota State sophomore Raivenne Scott to compete in reining at the Sun Circuit Shootout on Sunday, Feb. 2, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The first go of the event starts with the eight participants competing for a win in a single elimination bracket. The competition structure dictates that the two riders in the bracket use the same horse, showcasing each rider’s individual skills and versatility when performing the assigned pattern. Only four competitors can move on to the second go. From there, two riders again compete head to head, using the same horse to run their final pattern.

A Cornelius, Ore., native majoring in animal science, Scott dominated the event of reining this year for the Jackrabbits, posting a perfect 7-0 record through the fall season, which includes a season-high score of 76 against Baylor at the Willis Invitational on Sept. 28.

The Sun Circuit Shootout is now one of three invitational championships offered for collegiate western competitors. The AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge hosted by the AQHA World Championship Show, the only invitational for collegiate horsemanship riders. The National Reining Horse Association hosts a collegiate reining invitational in conjunction with the NRHA Derby.

Before the Sun Circuit Shootout, Scott and the Jackrabbits take on Kansas State on Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center a 9 a.m.
