Equestrian captures Independent Championship title
BROOKINGS – Tied at 6-6 with UT-Martin going into the final event of the day, the South Dakota State reining riders swept all four points to lock up the 10-6 win and the 2014 Independent Championship title.
“I was excited to see our student-athletes go into the ring with such confidence this weekend and have such strong performances in every event,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “Mentally, they are in a great place, and this tournament was an important win at the end of a tough season.”
The Jackrabbits, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, improves to 3-9 in the season with the win, while the Skyhawks, the No. 2 seed in the event, fall to 6-9.
Wright, along with Blair Julia Wright both scored points on Saturday on the flat. Santana evened her record at 5-5 on the flat, while Blair Julia moves to 6-3-1 on the season.
Santana also scored a point over fences to improve to 7-5 in that event, while Marielle Golden moved to 2-1 over fences.
Fresno State downed Delaware State 14-1 in the consolation bracket to win third place.
The Jackrabbits now wait to find out of the weekend did enough to get them into NCEA Nationals in April. That announcement should come in the next week.
