Hornets buzz Jackrabbits in Delaware
DOVER, Del. - The South Dakota State equestrian team rode in its final Varsity Equestrian regular season show on Sunday at Delaware State, but came up on the short end against the Hornets 10-6, falling by the same 5-3 mark in both hunt seat and Western disciplines.
"Obviously we're disappointed with the results, but happy with the overall team effort," interim head coach Joe Humphrey said. "We put together several very good rides, especially Santana Wright and Angela Gebhart, who won the MVPs in their respective events. We never want to end the regular season with a loss or send of this senior class on this kind of note, but all we can do now is rebound, improve and get ready for our next event."
Gebhart won her fourth MVP award of the season with a 69-point ride in reining, where the Jackrabbits scored all three of their points in Western. Maggie Holzworth and Lydia Placzek scored the other two SDSU points in reining.
Wright rode away with MVP honors in equitation over fences, scoring an 83, four points more than the next closest rider Megan Violand who also scored an SDSU point with a score of 79.
Megan Schiffman scored the final Jackrabbit hunt seat point with an 80-point performance on the flat.
The Jackrabbits Western team returns to action next weekend at the IHSA Western Semifinals in Findlay, Ohio, while the hunt seat riders waits for their next competition on April 8-9 at the IHSA Hunt Seat Zone Finals at an undetermined location.
