Wright rides to Pin Oak semifinals
KATY, Texas - South Dakota State hunt seat rider Santana Wright posted the highest over fences score of the night on Sunday at the inaugural Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Collegiate Invitational, but drew a difficult mare in the semifinals, where her day ended in third place.
"Santana represented SDSU in fine style, going out in her first round and scoring the highest score of the night with an 87 to beat the Delaware State rider's score of 80," SDSU interim assistant coach Leigh Nichol said. "She found herself in a pressure situation and rose to the occasion, which moved her into the semi-finals. She finished third overall, and I couldn't be more proud of her, she did exactly what we asked of her; assessed, analyzed and adapted to compete as well as she could."
A freshman from Port Hope, Ontario, Wright posted her high score of 87 in a first round defeat of Delaware State's Amanda Hotz, who scored an 80. Wright's night ended in the next round in a loss to Gabrielle LaBoeuf of LSU, who advanced to the finals with a 62-48 win.
SMU's Emily Gardner went on to win the event, which benefits Texas Children's Hospital and Houston's Ronald McDonald Family Room, in a close 73-71 finish over LaBoeuf in the finals.
