WACO, Texas - The South Dakota State equestrian team split a pair of head to head competitions on Saturday at the Willis Invitational hosted by Baylor. The Jackrabbits fell in the first show 9-7 to Fresno State, but came back to beat Miami (Ohio) in the second show of the day.

The split gives the Jacks a 1-2 record after the first weekend of competition

"It was a close loss to Fresno State that could've gone either way," head coach Megan Rossiter said. "This has been a great weekend to get us prepared for the season and find out what we really need to work on."

After dropping the hunt seat portion of the show against Fresno State 6-2, the Jackrabbit Western team scored five of the eight points to make it a close finish. Maggie Holzworth and Kelsey Champagne both scored points in horsemanship, while Jana Basler, Helen Lauth and Maggie Holzworth all picked-up wins in reining, with Holzworth earning MVP honors with a high score of 75.

In the second show of the day against the Redhawks, the Jacks rolled to 6-2 lead after the hunt seat events, with Megan Schiffman, Lauren Kerr and Victoria Pecak getting points in equitation on the flat. Schiffman earned MVP honors.

Meredeith Sauer, Megan Violand and Santana Wright all won points in equitation over fences.

Miami University does not field a Western team, so riders from all four teams at the invitational team-up to down the SDSU Western squad 5-3. Amy Mandelke and Champagne both won points in horsemanship, with Champagne taking home MVP honors. Lauth won the only point for the Jacks in reining.

The Jackrabbits return to action on Oct. 22, when they open the home slate against UT-Martin at the DeHaan Equestrian Center.
