Jacks fall to USD in the pool
VERMILLION — The University of South Dakota claimed eight of 13 events en route to a 135-108 victory over South Dakota State in a women's swimming and diving dual Saturday afternoon at the DakotaDome.
Senior Morgan McLain was a double winner for the Jackrabbits, pushing her season win total to 16 by claiming the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 23.89 second and the 100 backstroke in 1:05.66. Jessica Ferley was second in the 100 backstroke for SDSU in a time of 1:06.53 and added a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle, 2:09.41.
Freshman Samantha Fossum led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top two spots in the 800-meter freestyle, posting a winning time of 9:14.46. Andrea Budahl was runner-up in 9:20.41. Fossum added a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:30.76.
Also claiming individual victories for the Jackrabbits were Ashley Valdez in the 100-meter butterfly, 1:05.99, and Erin Eagen, who won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 253.60. Trina Young added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.41.
The Jackrabbits will resume competition during their winter training trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., Jan. 2-9. Their next meet is home on Jan. 13 against Iowa Central Community College at 6 p.m.
