SDSU swimmers honored for academics
Four South Dakota State University swimming and diving student-athletes — two men and two women — were named to the Summit League All-Academic Team as voted on by the sponsoring institutions' faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.
Representing the Jackrabbit women's team were Kylie Poel and Andrea Budahl. A senior from Milbank, Poel has compiled a 3.977 grade-point average while majoring in microbiology and pre-veterinary science. She wrapped up her collegiate career by placing eighth in the 200-yard butterfly at last week's Summit League Championships.
Budahl, a junior from Mitchell, earned a spot on the 10-member women's honor squad with a 3.791 GPA while majoring in early childhood education. She earned all-Summit League recognition individually with a third-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle at the 2013 league championships. She also finished fifth in the 500 free and sixth in the 400 individual medley.
Earning spots on the men's side from the league runner-up Jackrabbits were Phil Albu and Greg Thompson. A junior from Charlie Lake, British Columbia, Albu was honored after posting a 3.947 GPA while majoring in software engineering and computer science. His highest finish at the league championships was a fourth-place effort in the 100 backstroke.
A senior from Rochester, Minn., Thompson was recognized on the academic honor squad with a 3.75 GPA while pursuing microbiology and pre-pharmacy degrees. He competed in the distance freestyle and butterfly events at the league meet.
Also this week, both Jackrabbit swimming and diving teams were named as College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America teams. SDSU ranked in a tie with Brown University (R.I.) for 14th with a team GPA of 3.47, while the Jackrabbit men posted a top-50 showing with a 3.09 team GPA.
