ELMHURST, Ill. -- Led by Summit League Pitcher of the Year Layne Somsen, five South Dakota State University baseball players were named to the all-Summit League team at a pre-tournament banquet Thursday night.

A senior from Yankton, Somsen has posted a 4-4 record with a 1.91 earned run average this season. He turned in a quality start of at least six innings in his first 10 of 11 starts this season, recording 73 strikeouts in 75.1 innings. Somsen also has limited the opposition to a .202 batting average.

Joining Somsen on the first team were fellow senior pitcher Stephen Bougher and designated hitter Daniel Telford. Bougher, a native of Papillion, Neb., has recorded a 7-2 overall record with a 3.28 ERA, including a 5-1 mark in league play. The Jackrabbit career leader in starts (46) and innings pitched (282.2), Bougher has pitched two shutouts during the 2013 season.

Telford, a senior from Newmarket, Ontario, ranked among the league leaders with five home runs and 31 runs batted in. His .427 batting average 41-of-96) would have led the Summit League, but he did not have enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title after missing some time due to injury.

Two more Jackrabbit pitchers -- sophomores Adam Bray and J.D. Moore -- received second-team recognition. Bray enters the Summit League Baseball Championship with a 7-2 record and 2.92 ERA, while Moore set a Jackrabbit single-season record with 11 saves to go along with a 1.93 ERA in a team-high 21 appearances.

Omaha's Ryan Keele was named both player and newcomer of the year, while Maverick mentor Bob Herold was honored as Summit League Coach of the Year.

South Dakota State, 31-21 overall, enters the Summit League Baseball Championship as  the No. 1 seed. The Jackrabbits will take on fourth-seeded Western Illinois in first-round action at noon Eastern Time (11 a.m. Central) Thursday in Rochester, Mich. The winner of the four-team, double-elimination tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
