Two league champions on Day 2...

The South Dakota State men’s and women’s track and field teams combined for two individual league champions on Friday…

Jared Vlastuin repeated as long jump champion at the Outdoor Championships. Vlastuin won with a mark of 25 feet, four inches, and broke the school record by two inches and the stadium record by nearly one foot. The distance was best by nearly 10 inches. Vlastuin also tied a season-best in the high jump with a mark of six feet, 11 inches, to finish in third.

Greg Vollmer was runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:12.92. Drew Kraft also scored with a fifth-place finish in 9:21.14, a season-best, as well.

Mike Bredeson also scored in the high jump with a mark of six feet, one and one-fourth inches, to finish tied-for-seventh. The mark is a season-best for Bredeson.

Mary Wirth repeated as champion in the high jump at the Outdoor Championships. Wirth set the meet record and tied the stadium record with a mark of five feet, eight and one-half inches. The mark also ties a season-best.

In addition to Wirth, Lora Shearer and Kali Olson scored team points in the high jump. Shearer fought through injury to finish second with a season-best mark of five feet, six and one-half inches. Olson placed eighth with a season-best mark of five feet, four and one-half inches. Shearer also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, nine inches, a season-best.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Danielle McCann and Tera Potts were fifth and seventh, respectively. McCann finished in 10:49.01, a season-best, and Potts finished in 11:01.60, also a season-best.

Ashley Odegaard placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, one and one-half inches.

Many athletes qualified in preliminary races for tomorrow’s finals.

On the women’s side, Megan Bren finished tied-for-third in the 400-meter dash to qualify for the finals. Odegaard was fifth in the 100-meter dash to qualify. Shearer posted the seventh-best time in the 100-meter hurdles to qualify for the finals. Krista Creager and Molly Kopfmann finished in 10th and 12th to qualify for the 800.

Chris Curry qualified with the sixth-best time in the 100. Brandon Priebe matched Shearer’s performance on the men’s side to qualify for the finals. Priebe also qualified for the 400-meter hurdles, along with Justin Carson. Jake Schneller, Jared Ailts, Dominic Thielen and Lars Mattison all qualified for the 800.

At the end of Day 2, both the SDSU men and women are fourth in the team standings.
