Looking to reach new heights
High jumper Mary Wirth is competing Saturday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Wirth is one of 24 high jumpers in the field. The 12 jumpers that advanced from the west region posted a height of 5 feet, 9 3/4 inches. The final two spots were determined in a jump off between eight girls at 5-9 3/4.
In the east region, seven jumpers cleared 5-11 1/4 and the other five entrants posted a height of 5-9 3/4. Two of the jumpers qualified for the national meet via a jump off at 5-8 3/4.
The bar progression for Saturday is as follows: 5-7 3/4, 5-9 3/4, 5-10 3/4, 6-0 and then the bar will be raised 3 centimeters until there is one jumper left.
Earlier this year Wirth set her personal-best mark and school record height of 5-10 3/4 in the outdoor season-opener at the Arizona State University Invitational.
This is the first NCAA Outdoor Championship meet for the junior from Sioux Falls.
The high jump event is slated for a start time of 2:45 p.m. CT at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. ESPN3 is providing live coverage of the meet and the link for Saturday can be found at the top of this article.
