The South Dakota State men's and women's track and field teams compete in the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week and into the weekend...
The championships are set to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Fargo, N.D. The first event on the schedule is the men's decathlon.
School records fell for both the men's and women's track teams during the indoor season. In total, two records were set on the men's side, while three women's records were set.
On the men's side,, who earned Male Field Championship MVP honors for the 2012 Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships, leads the men. Vlastuin owns the top four high jump and long jump marks of the outdoor season. Three long jumps and two high jumps were first-place marks. Vlastuin is ranked second in The Summit League in both events.
Calvin Cammack set the record in the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, nine and one-fourth inches at the Bryan Clay Invite. Cammack won two competitions and posted the top-six team marks. Cammack is ranked third in the league in the pole vault.
Jake Brinkmann set the record in the hammer throw with a toss of 195 feet, one inch at the USF Relays this past weekend and ranks second in the league. Brinkmann posted the top-five team marks in the hammer, as well as the top-three in the discus.
Brandon Priebe posted the top-six 110 times, as
well as the top-three 400 times, and is fourth in the league in the 400-meter hurdles.
Jake Schneller is third in two events, the 800 and 1500, with times of 1:50.11 and 3:47.33, respectively.
Greg Vollmer is also third in the league in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:17.08.
On the women's side, Brooke Garner dominated the outdoor season. Garner was named The Summit League's Outdoor Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week twice this season, most recently this week. Garner posted the top-five marks in the discus and the top-six in the hammer en route to eight total wins. In both of those events, Garner broke the school records and holds the best throws in the league. The throw in the discus was 173 feet, three inches, while the throw in the hammer was 197 feet, nine inches. The discus is also a record for the state of South Dakota and ranks 30th in the nation.
Amy Paulzine broke the other school record in the javelin with a mark of 149 feet, nine inches. The mark ranks second in The Summit League.
Ashley Odegaard ranks second in the long jump after a leap of 18 feet, 11 and one-fourth inches this past weekend.
Mary Wirth, the indoor high jump champion, posted the top-six team marks this season. Wirth is ranked second in the league by one-fourth inch heading into the championships.
Female Field Championship MVP at the 2012 Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships, Lora Shearer, is fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
