Busy weekend on tap for Jackrabbit track and field
The South Dakota State track and field teams are set to compete at the Jim Duncan Invite, the Nebraska Quad and the Sioux City Relays this weekend. The Jackrabbits will be at the Jim Duncan Invite and the Sioux City Relays later today and will compete tomorrow at the Nebraska Quad.
Jim Duncan Invite
A handful of Jackrabbit distance runners are set to run later today. The Jackrabbits have runners entered in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (men and women) and the 5,000-meter run (men and women). The Jim Duncan Invite is held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
6:30 p.m.: Men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (Drew Kraft, Andrew Thies)
6:50 p.m.: Women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (Kirsten Anderson, Alex Suhr)
7:10 p.m.: Women’s 5,000-meter run (Cheyanne Bowers, Jenna Grossenburg, Courtney Neubert)
7:35 p.m.: Men’s 5,000-meter run (Trevor Capra, Joel Reichow)
The Nebraska Quad is held at Ed Weir Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. The action starts tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the women’s hammer throw and the men’s shot put. The running events begin at 3 p.m., with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
South Dakota State, along with host Nebraska, is competing against Northern Colorado and Oral Roberts.
Sioux City Relays
The Sioux City Relays are held at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Jackrabbits will only be competing Friday at the Sioux City Relays. The action for SDSU starts at 4:30 p.m.
Last Year at the Nebraska Quad
Brooke Garner kept her hot streak rolling as she won her fourth event in three weeks.
In the hammer throw, Garner won the event with a toss of 198 feet, 3 inches and McKenzie Johnson recorded a personal-best distance of 154-9.
Johnson also finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 44-6.
In the discus throw, Garner finished second with her distance 161-1.
Tera Potts recorded a personal-best time in the 1500-meter run with her time of 4 minutes, 37.71 seconds. Potts finished second in the race.
In the javelin throw, Amy Paulzine finished third with a distance of 135-11. She also placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 151-2.
Carly Carper took fourth in the long jump with her distance of 17-6.25.
School Records Fall
Jazzelena Black and Mary Wirth opened up their 2014 outdoor season with record-breaking performances. Black set the school record in the triple jump with her mark of 40-3 1/2 and Wirth re-set her school record in the high jump (5-10 3/4). Her old school record was set at the 2011 Howard Wood Dakota Relays (5-9 3/4). Wirth also holds the indoor high jump school record mark (5-10).

Wirth’s high jump mark of 5-10 3/4 is tied for 11th in the nation.
Summit League Honors
Wirth was named The Summit League’s Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week (April 1) for her record-setting performance at the Arizona State University Invitational.
Twenty-two Jackrabbits garnered All-Summit League honors at the 2013-14 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Andrew Thies was named to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Team. Thies, a junior, currently holds a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.926 as a Pharmacy major. He was also named Academic All-League during the 2013 outdoor season.
The Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third in The Summit League Preseason Poll and the women were selected fourth.
The Jackrabbits are out west next weekend for their annual California trip. They will be competing at the Long Beach State Invite (April 19) and the Mt. SAC Relays (April 17-19).
