Jackrabbits are California bound
The South Dakota State track and field teams are traveling to California this weekend as they are competing in three meets. The Jacks will be at the Bryan Clay Invite, the Long Beach State Invite and the Mt. SAC Relays.
The action begins today for SDSU as Bennett Mercil competes in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invite. Tomorrow a handful of Jackrabbits are slated to compete at Mt. SAC and Bryan Clay. On Friday, the Jackrabbits will compete at the Bryan Clay Invite and the Long Beach State Invite. The Long Beach State Invite is also all day Saturday.
Last Year In California
Tera Potts qualified for the NCAA West Regional meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her school-record time of 10 minutes, 34.39 seconds at the Beach Invite and at the Bryan Clay Invite, Potts ran a personal-best time of 4:33.90 in the 1,500-meter run.
On the men’s side, Trent Lusignan qualified for the NCAA West Regional Meet with his personal-best time of 29:40.56 in the 10,000-meter run. Lusignan’s time currently ranks third all-time at SDSU.
Movin’ On Up
During the first few weeks of the 2014 outdoor track and field season, SDSU has set 21 top-10 school record book performances.
School Records Fall
Jazzelena Black and Mary Wirth opened up their 2014 outdoor season with record-breaking performances. Black set the school record in the triple jump with her mark of 40 feet, 3 1/2 inches and Wirth re-set her school record in the high jump (5-10 3/4). Her old school record was set at the 2011 Howard Wood Dakota Relays (5-9 3/4). Wirth also holds the indoor high jump school record mark (5-10).

Wirth’s high jump mark of 5-10 3/4 is tied for 15th in the nation.
Summit League Honors
Wirth was named The Summit League’s Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week (April 1) for her record-setting performance at the Arizona State University Invitational.
Twenty-two Jackrabbits garnered All-Summit League honors at the 2013-14 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Andrew Thies was named to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Team. Thies, a junior, currently holds a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.926 as a Pharmacy major. He was also named Academic All-League during the 2013 outdoor season.
The Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third in The Summit League Preseason Poll and the women were selected fourth.
The 105th running of the Drake Relays is held next week (April 23-27) in Des Moines, Iowa.
