Jackrabbits travel to Iowa for two meets

The South Dakota State track and field teams are on the road in Iowa this weekend for the 105th Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open. The Jackrabbits are competing at both meets starting Thursday.

Drake Relays
The 105th Drake Relays are held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The Drake Relays is one of the top meets in the nation and features top competition.

The Jackrabbits get underway at the Drake Relays Thursday at 4:40 p.m., with the running of the women’s 4x1600-meter relay.

Kip Janvrin Open
The Kip Janvrin Open is held by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. The two-day meet starts Thursday with the throwing of hammer throw and discus events. The action on Thursday is slated for a 2 p.m., start.

The rest of the events are held Friday starting at 2 p.m. (women’s pole vault and women’s 4x100-meter relay).

Last Time Out
The Jackrabbits competed at the Mount Marty Twilight Tuesday and numerous throwers posted top results. Shelby Assmus and Amy Paulzine each tallied a win Tuesday at the Mount Marty Twilight. Along with Assmus and Paulzine winning, the Jackrabbits set personal-best performances throughout the day.

Less than a week after posting a personal-best throw in the shot put at the Bryan Clay Invite, Austin Benson posted personal-best throws in the discus and the hammer throw Tuesday at the Mount Marty Twilight. Benson tallied two third-place finishes and a sixth-place finish on the day.

Last Year at Drake
Anthony Bongard and Trent Lusignan both finished in the top-10 in their respective races at the Drake Relays.

Bongard competed in the 10,000-meter run and posted a personal-best time of 30 minutes, 11.73 seconds. He finished eighth overall in the race.

In the 5,000-meter run, Lusignan finished eighth overall. Lusignan ran a time of 14:18.66. Michael Krsnak was also in the race and finished 15th with his time of 14:37.41.

The team of Megan Bren, Gina Fritz, Ashley Odegaard and Carly Carper ran the 4x200-meter relay in 1:40.42. They were .01 seconds away from tying the school record (1:40.41) set back in 2011.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Dominique Wright, Jared Foote, Justin Carson and Luke Leischner ran the race in 1:27.19. They finished eighth overall. Their time ranks fourth in SDSU history.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Krista Creager, Tera Potts, Bobbie McLaury and Laura Lawton finished in 9:17.87. Their time ranks second overall in SDSU history.

Movin’ On Up
SDSU has set 26 top-10 school record book performances during the 2014 outdoor track and field season.

School Records Fall
Jazzelena Black and Mary Wirth opened up their 2014 outdoor season with record-breaking performances. Black set the school record in the triple jump with her mark of 40 feet, 3 1/2 inches and Wirth re-set her school record in the high jump (5-10 3/4). Her old school record was set at the 2011 Howard Wood Dakota Relays (5-9 3/4). Wirth also holds the indoor high jump school record mark (5-10).

Wirth In The Nation
Wirth’s high jump mark of 5-10 3/4 is tied for 20th in the nation.

Summit League Honors
Wirth was named The Summit League’s Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week (April 1) for her record-setting performance at the Arizona State University Invitational.

Feelin’ 22
Twenty-two Jackrabbits garnered All-Summit League honors at the 2013-14 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Smart Rabbit
Andrew Thies was named to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Team. Thies, a junior, currently holds a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.926 as a Pharmacy major. He was also named Academic All-League during the 2013 outdoor season.

Preseason Polls
The Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third in The Summit League Preseason Poll and the women were selected fourth.

The Jackrabbits return to the state of South Dakota for the 89th Howard Wood Dakota Relays (May 2-3) in Sioux Falls.
