Jackrabbit women win three titles at Howard Wood

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women’s track and field team claimed three titles Friday at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. Kirsten Anderson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Amy Paulzine took the javelin title and the 4x100-meter relay team set a personal-best time en route to their victory.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jacleen Patterson, Jazzelena Black, Gina Fritz and Carly Carper improved on their time of 47.17 seconds set earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invite. Today, the quartet posted a time of 46.87 to win the 4x100-meter relay by almost two seconds over the rest of the field. Their time today still ranks sixth at SDSU.

Anderson won the first race of her Jackrabbit career Friday. Anderson posted an overall time of 11:15.77 to take the 3,000-meter steeplechase title. Also in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Alex Suhr took third with her time of 11:28.44.

Paulzine won the javelin throw with her mark of 142 feet, 0 inches. Also in the javelin throw, Erin Ellinger took seventh with her personal-best mark of 114-9.

Mary Wirth and Kali Olson tied for a second-place finish in the high jump event as they both finished with a height of 5-8.

After setting a personal-best time last week in the 800-meter run, Erica Meyer ran to another personal-best time Friday. Meyer placed fourth overall with her final time of 2:15.43.

In the pole vault, Logan Amdahl cleared a personal-best height of 10-11 3/4 to place 10th.

Four Jackrabbit throwers placed in the top-10 of the hammer throw event. Shelby Assmus led the Jackrabbit contingent with her second-place finish. She placed second with her personal-best mark of 181-0. Her mark still ranks third all-time at SDSU.

McKenzie Johnson, Trisha Sumption and Paulzine joined Assmus in the top-10 of the hammer throw. Johnson (163-8) recorded a seventh-place finish, Sumption (162-11) took eighth and Paulzine (149-10) placed 10th.

Johnson also placed in the top-10 in the shot put. She tallied a mark of 41-11 1/4 to take ninth.

In the 200-meter dash, Carper and Fritz finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Carper posted a time of 23.99 and Fritz clocked in at 24.39.

The McDonald sisters finished back-to-back in the 400-meter dash. Kala McDonald placed 11th with her personal-best time of 59.71, while Jessica McDonald finished in 12th with her time of 1:00.04.

Jenna Stephens posted a fifth-place finish in the triple jump with her mark of 35-5.

In the final event of the day, the 5,000-meter run, Jenna Grossenburg (17:58.04) and Cheyanne Bowers (18:01.60) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Jackrabbits wrap up action at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
