Team effort leads to second-place finish

FARGO, N.D. – It took three days, 32 student-athletes, six coaches and two trainers for the South Dakota State women’s track & field team to record their best finish since the 2008 conference championships. The Jackrabbits or sometimes called the ‘TrackRabbits’ claimed the runner-up spot at the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Amy Paulzine and four other Jackrabbit throwers finished in the top-10 of the discus throw. Pauzline recorded a distance of 153 feet, 9 inches to claim third-place for the Jackrabbits. The Jackrabbits also claimed fifth through seventh. Shelby Assmus went fifth (146-9), Becca Fischer placed sixth (144-11) and Silvia Zanini claimed seventh (144-8). Kae Januschka took the ninth-place spot with her mark of 140-8.

Three Jackrabbit jumpers placed in the top-10 of the triple jump event. Jazzelena Black led the charge with her fourth-place finish (39-2 1/4). Jenna Stephens and Mary Wirth placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Stephens cleared a personal-best distance of 37-3 1/4, while Wirth posted a mark of 36-11.

Four Jackrabbits placed in the top-10 of the 5,000-meter run. Cheyanne Bowers placed second with her personal-best time of 17 minutes, 37.77 seconds. Joining Bowers in the top-10 was Alex Suhr, Megan West and Jenna Grossenburg. Suhr (fifth) crossed the finish line in 17:53.82, West (seventh) clocked in at 18:06.57 and Grossenburg (10th) ran a time of 18:24.02. Suhr set a personal-best time today in the 5,000-meter run.

After taking third in the 60-meter hurdles at the indoor conference meet earlier this year, Marissia Hagedorn ran a time of 14.53 to finish second in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday. Also in the 100-meter hurdles, Cailyn Schreurs ran a personal-best time of 14.95 for sixth-place.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jacleen Patterson, Jazzelena Black, Gina Fritz and Carly Carper placed second overall with their personal-best time of 46.70. They now rank fourth all-time in school history.

Fritz placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with her personal-best time of 56.66. Her time today moves her into ninth all-time at SDSU.

In the 100-meter dash, Carper and Black placed third and fifth, respectively. Carper posted a time of 11.90 and Black ran a personal-best time of 12.30.

Carper and Fritz finished back-to-back in the 200-meter dash. Carper finished fourth (24.53) and Fritz claimed fifth (24.97).

Jessica Eibs, Lindsey Strait and Brooke Peterson all finished in the top-10 of the 1,500-meter run. Eibs placed fourth (4:35.56), Strait took sixth (4:41.57) and Peterson claimed seventh (4:44.76).

Bobbie McLaury paced the Jackrabbits in the 800-meter run. McLaury placed sixth with her time of 2:15.29. Also in the 800-meter run, Eibs ran a time of 2:16.96 to place eighth.

Lori Foltz posted a personal-best time of 1:03.91 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish fifth. Her time today moves her into seventh all-time at SDSU. Also in the 400-meter hurdles, Hagedorn placed seventh with a time of 1:05.05 and Evelyn Klein ran a time of 1:06.08 to take ninth.

In the final event of the day for the Jackrabbit women, the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Fritz, Foltz, Patterson and Carper posted a time of 3:58.40 to finish fourth.

Kali Olson and Wirth are on their way to the NCAA West Regional meet in two weeks. Olson and Wirth will both compete in high jump event on May 31 at 6 p.m. on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

Overall, the Jackrabbit women placed second with a total of 193 points.
