Three Jackrabbits qualify for Regionals
Three South Dakota State track & field student-athletes are on their way to the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Round next week in Fayetteville, Ark. Shelby Assmus (shot put), Kali Olson (high jump) and Mary Wirth (high jump) will be representing South Dakota State next week at the University of Arkansas.
Assmus enters the shot put event with the 47th-best mark in the field. She a tallied distance of 48 feet, 4 inches en route to a second-place finish last weekend at the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This is the first regional meet for Assmus. Currently, her mark ranks third all-time at SDSU. The shot put event is slated for 6:30 p.m. on May 29.
In the high jump, Wirth holds the 10th-best height in the field (5-10 3/4) and Olson ranks 43rd (5-8 3/4). Wirth set her personal-best height in the outdoor season-opener at the Arizona State University Invite. Olson cleared her personal-best height of 5-8 3/4 last weekend at the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The high jump event takes place May 31 at 6 p.m.
Wirth won her third outdoor conference high jump title last weekend and Olson placed fourth. Wirth currently holds the outdoor high jump school record and Olson is tied for second.
This is the third time Wirth has qualified for the regional meet and the second for Olson. Wirth placed 17th (5-7) in 2011 and 32nd (5-7 1/4) in 2012. Last year, Olson took 42nd with her height of 5-5.
The top-12 finishers in each individual event advance to the NCAA Championships held in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14.
