BROOKINGS, S.D. – Anthony Bongard and Michael Krsnak led the South Dakota State men’s cross country team to a win at the SDSU Classic Saturday in Brookings, S.D., while the women’s team took a fourth-place finish.
Bongard found his first win of the season and second career win with a career-best 8K time of 24 minutes 46.10 seconds.
Krsnak followed close behind with a career-best time of 24:50.80 and a second-place finish.
Greg Vollmer finished fifth with a time of 25:12 and Kyle Schmidt finished in eighth with a time of 25:36.30. Jared Ailts rounded out the top-10 for the Jacks with a time of 25:42.5 and a 10th-place finish.
As a team, the Jacks compiled 26 points to win the meet. Nebraska-Kearney came in second with 66 points and Minnesota State, Mankato, finished third with 93 points.
On the women’s side, Erin Hargens took the top place for the Jacks with a sixth-place finish and a time of 17:58.50 in the 5K.
Morgan Place of Minnesota-Duluth paced the women's race with her time of 17:06.50. Minnesota took the second, third and fourth place spots in Nikki Swenson (17:16.50), Missa Varpness (17:20.40) and Ashlie Decker (17:42.50), respectively. Lindsay Anderson of North Dakota rounded out the top-five with a time of 17:47.40.
As a team, Minnesota tallied 24 team points to win the Classic. Minnesota-Duluth came in second place with 58 points, while North Dakota came in third with 95 points. The Jacks recorded 102 team points for a fourth-place finish.
The Jacks have a week off before the women head to the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. Oct. 15, while the men travel to Terre Haute, Ind. Oct. 16 to compete in Pre Nationals.
