SDSU men’s cross country voted preseason favorite…
The South Dakota State men’s cross country team, the two-time defending Summit League Men’s Champion, was voted as the preseason favorite to capture the 2011 men’s title in a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches.
In the men’s poll, the Jackrabbits received five first-place votes en route to 75 points and edged out Southern Utah, which received four first-place votes and 71 points.
North Dakota State received 65 points to finish in third place, while Oakland finished in fourth with 61 points, but received the last remaining first-place vote.
IUPUI finished in fifth with 41 points, one point ahead of league newcomer South Dakota, which finished in sixth place with 40 points.
UMKC, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts and IPFW rounded out the poll for the men.
The Jacks welcome back three of its four all-league selections from last year’s championship team, including first team selection Michael Krsnak. Also with Krsnak, SDSU returns a pair of second team performers in Jared Ailts and Greg Vollmer.
On the women’s side, Southern Utah ran away with the poll, as it received eight of the first-place votes en route to 80 total points.
North Dakota State came in second with 72 points and the other two first-place votes.
Oakland, the 2010 Summit League Champion, came in third place with 66 points.
Only three points separate fourth, fifth and sixth-place. South Dakota came in fourth with 46 points, followed closely by UMKC with 45 points and South Dakota State with 43 points.
The Jackrabbits finished in sixth place last season and are voted to find the same slot at the end of this season.
IUPUI, IPFW, Oral Roberts and Western Illinois rounded out the poll for the women.
The SDSU women’s team returns one all-league selection in Erin Hargens, a first team selection.
South Dakota State opens the men’s and women’s cross country seasons on Saturday, Sept. 3, in Grand Forks, N.D., for the UND Ron Pynn Invitational. The invitational will have dual meet scoring with SDSU, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and invitational host North Dakota. The invitational is set to begin at 9:45 a.m.
The lone home meet for the Jackrabbits this season is the SDSU Classic, set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9:30 a.m.
