Jackrabbit women second at Classic

The South Dakota State University women's cross country team turned in a second-place performance in the team standings as it hosted the SDSU Classic Friday evening at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Runners from the University of Minnesota claimed the first nine spots as the Golden Gophers finished with a perfect score of 15. Molly Kayfes led Minnesota with a winning time of 17 minutes, 15.82 seconds in the 5,000-meter race. Laura Docherty finished second out of 85 runners in 17:22.95.

The Jackrabbits' five scoring runners were tightly packed, finishing within 21 seconds of each other. Laura Wolles clocked the top time of 18:27.24 to finish 16th overall, followed by Tera Potts in 17th at 18:31.65 and Erin Hargens in 18th with a time of 18:32.62. Cheyanne Bowers placed 20th overall in 18:41.09, with Laura Lawton finishing 23rd in 18:48.42.

Courtney Neubert added a 25th-place time of 18:54.24.

SDSU finished in the runner-up spot out of seven collegiate teams with 73 points, followed  by North Dakota with 100 points and North Dakota State at 102.

SDSU returns to action Sept. 29 at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
