Doubles reign supreme at Omaha Invite

OMAHA, Neb. -- South Dakota State tennis won a doubles flight on both the men's and women's side Saturday in the second day of competition at the Omaha Invite.

On the men's side, Andrea Boglić and Parker Lawley won flight A with wins over teams from Nebraska Omaha, Creighton and Nebraska Kearney in the finals. They won by scores of 8-2, 8-4 and 8-4, respectively. Other men's doubles action included Gary Notkin and Lovro Curcija going 2-1 in flight B, while Jonny Higham and Mateus Moreira went 1-2. The tandem of Henrique and Lucas Pereira went 1-2 in flight C. 

"Parker and Andrea played three solid matches with no mental errors," head coach Michael Engdahl said. 

In singles action, Lawley fell to Creighton's Jake Norman 6-1, 7-6 (4) in flight A. He will face North Dakota's Ryan McGuigan for third place tomorrow. In flight F action, Gary Notkin defeated Creighton's Jack Fay 6-1, 6-1 to advance to tomorrow's championship match.

Other SDSU victories on the day came from Lucas Pereira and Lovro Curcija, both in flight D. Curcija defeated UNK's Justin Nguyen 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-7 to advance to tomorrow's title match. Pereira will compete in the fifth-place match after defeating UNK's Kyle Conzemius 5-6, 6-1, 12-10. In flight G, Luis Duque defeated UNK's Daniel Castaneda 6-2, 6-1 and will play for fifth tomorrow.

On the women's side, Tiffany Henry and Brooke Henry went 3-0 in flight C to win the flight. They defeated teams from UNK, UND and UNO in the title match.

"Tiffany and Brooke never struggled today," Engdahl said, "they won their matches convincingly."

Other doubles action saw Ffion Davies and Jenny Blackburne win a pair of matches today to take fifth place in flight A. In flight B, Tacy Haws-Lay and Beatriz Souza went 2-1 on the day to take third place.

In singles action, Florencia Magni defeated UND's Steph Petsis 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 to advance to tomorrow's fifth-place match. In flight D, Beatriz Souza defeated UNK's Kari Emery 6-1, 6-0, while Brooke Henry defeated UND's Thalia Petsis 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 in flight E.

"We had a lot of close singles matches," Engdahl said. "We had some moments where we need to be mentally stronger, even in some matches we won. Overall, it was another good day and we are looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow."

Sunday's finals will begin at 9 a.m.
