OMAHA, NEB. - Despite getting swept by Creighton, the South Dakota State men's and women's tennis team battled throughout as the men lost 6-1 while the women dropped a 7-0 decision.
Four of the six singles matches for the men (1-1) went to three sets with James Thorp earning the lone Jackrabbit point with a #4 singles win 6-7, 6-3, 6-2,
The three other three setters saw the Jacks win the first set before dropping the final two. #2 singles Jamie Dash won set one 6-4 before losing 1-6, 4-6. Carl Lundgerg won the opening set 6-1 only to lose the final two 5-7 and 2-6. In #5 singles, Chris Baron won the first set 6-3 with a 2-6, 8-10 loss to follow.
Baron joined Justin Pyle in winning at #3 doubles 8-5. SDSU lost #1 and #2 doubles 8-3.The women (0-1) finaly got their spring season started after having their match at the University of Sioux Falls postponed last weekend due to travel conditions.
SDSU had a pair of matches go the distance, but came up short as #1 Bryna Nasenbeny lost 6-2, 2-6, 0-6 and #2 Jenny Blackburne (4-6, 6-2, 5-7) battle back after a first set loss to drop a third set that went down to the wire.
SDSU will rest up this coming week before returning to action on Feb. 25 when the women take on Augustana at 6 p.m. The men will also make the trip to Sioux Falls the next day to face the Vikings at 6 p.m.
