OMAHA, Neb. -- James Thorp shared the Flight C singles title to highlight a weekend of competition at the Omaha Collegiate Invitational for the South Dakota State University men's tennis team.
A junior from Canberra, Australia, Thorp opened the tournament with a pair of victories on Saturday. He notched a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 win over Lorenz Laurel of host Creighton in the morning, then came back with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Creighton's Elliott Baker in the afternoon.
Thorp also teamed with freshman Parker Lawley for a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles on Saturday. The pair defeated Jeff Carlson and Michael Moya of Northern Colorado, 8-4, and the team of Pete Greteman and Nate Greteman from Nebraska-Omaha, 8-2, en route to a Jackrabbit victory.
On Sunday, Thorp and Lawley dropped an 8-3 decision to J.T. Christian and Kyle Obermeier of Creighton. The Bluejays won the doubles competition against SDSU on the strength of an 8-2 victory by Billy Paluch and and Sean Mathison over Dominic Rosetto and Jamie Dash.
"It was a great weekend of tennis for the Jackrabbits," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Every single player on the men's and women's team picked up a victory. That shows just how hard everyone has been working the last month and how much we have improved as a team. It is great to see every player contribute to a successful tournament. I don't think we have even come close to 33 wins at this event. We will certainly use this momentum in practice and the tournaments to come the next couple weeks. "
Elsewhere in singles play, Justin Pyle was an opening-round winner in Flight A singles, recording a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha's Anthony Forcucci.
Dominic Rossetto went 2-1 to win the Flight A consolation. Chris Baron went 2-1 to win Flight B consolation.
