BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State women’s golf team was picked third and the men’s team fifth in 2014 The Summit League Coaches Poll Wednesday.

The women’s team received 36 votes from the league’s nine head coaches. Last season, SDSU was picked fifth.

First-year Summit League member Denver (49) was selected the favorite to claim the 2014 league championship. The Pioneers, ranked No. 42 in the Golfweek rankings, are followed by defending Summit League champions North Dakota State (43) in second.

Jackrabbit sophomore Sydney MacDonald ranked 13th in scoring average in the league after the fall season. In 15 rounds, MacDonald had a 79.1 scoring average.  Freshman Islamiah Fuad was 14th, shooting a 79.2 over 15 rounds, and classmate Hallie Getz was 16th with a 79.4 scoring average in nine rounds.

MacDonald and Getz also posted the 17th-lowest round in the league this past fall, shooting even-par 72s at the Payne Stewart Memorial Oct. 14-15.

The Jacks finished the fall season with the third-best team scoring average (315.7) and had the league’s 10th-lowest round during the second round of the Payne Stewart Memorial.

The men’s team received 28 votes from the league’s nine head coaches. Last season, SDSU was also picked fifth, but finished third in the 2013 Summit League Championship.

Denver (49) was picked the favorite to claim the 2014 Summit League title followed by IUPUI (39) and last year’s tournament runner-up South Dakota (32).

Jackrabbit Senior Hudson Carpenter, a first team All-Summit League and all-tournament selection last season, ranked second in the league in scoring average after the fall season. In 16 rounds, Carpenter had a 71.9 scoring average, just behind Denver’s Oskar Arvidsson’s 71.7.

Carpenter also posted the lowest round in the league this past fall, shooting a six-under par 66 in the first round of the Dual in the Tetons Aug. 31. Additionally, he had two other rounds in the top 10.

The Jacks finished the fall season with the third-best team scoring average (298.6) and had the league’s sixth- and seventh-lowest rounds during the third round of the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational Sept. 23-24.

Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club in Keller, Texas, is the site of the 2014 Summit League's Golf Championships. The three-day event takes place from April 21-23, and the team champions will earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Men's and Women’s Golf Tournament.

The SDSU golf teams return to action at the fifth annual Jackrabbit Invitational March 17-18, 2014, at Primm Valley Golf Course in Primm, Nev.
